Research Excellence

The Lowe Institute of Political Economy is one of 11 undergraduate research institutes at Claremont McKenna College. The Institute studies the intersection of economics, political science, and public policy and its impact at a regional, statewide, nationwide, and global level.

The experienced faculty members at our political economy research institute work closely with Claremont McKenna College students to create cutting-edge research that not only provides important insights and analysis to government leaders and the public, but also allows students to apply the concepts they learn in the classroom into real-world situations. Students from all five Claremont Colleges are welcome to apply to our programs.

Through this collaboration, the Lowe Institute of Political Economy has become a trusted think tank that has helped shed light on important issues facing our world today while starting the conversation about potential solutions.

Our research includes the Institute’s annual State of the Region forecast report for the Inland Empire, additional regional economic forecasts and reports, and faculty-research projects that span a wide array of topics, such as political economy and public policy issues within healthcare, education, the environment, and more.

“We help students understand how to take an issue of interest and translate it into a question that can be addressed with data, how to find the data, how to first convince themselves of the truth of the underlying phenomenon and then convince others."

Cameron A. Shelton, Director of the Lowe Institute of Political Economy
